The syllabus is on Coursebook Schedule (Subject to change)
This introductory course will give you an overview of our field.  However, its main purpose is to teach problem-solving and teamwork, as well as to teach you how to be an excellent computer science student.

If tests are given in the classroom (unlikely this semester; they will most likely be given online,) you'll need two ScanTron cards, one for each of the two tests.  Here's the link to the card that shows which one you need and how to fill it out: http://utdallas.edu/~John.Cole/Images/ScantronForm.png

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this course will be taught online, with recorded lectures uploaded to Microsoft Streams.  However, you will get the most out of this class if you are there in real time.  I'll have the chat window open and will answer questions posted there, and I'll call on people who raise their (virtual) hand in the session.  I teach using a combination of PowerPoint slides and in-class exercises.  If things settle down over the next couple of months I'll try to lecture in a classroom and intrepid students who are willing to wear a face mask and "social distance" can attend in person should they choose.  Of course the classes will still be online and recorded, as required.
Textbook: Studying Engineering, fifth edition, by Ray Landis.  ISBN 978-0-9793487-2-3

Optional:  The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking, by Edward Burger and Michael Starbird. ISBN 978-0-69115666-8

Another useful book is How to Become a Straight-A Student by Cal Newport.  He also has a blog with some very good material.

I came across The College De-Stress Handbook by Jeff Goelitz and Robert A. Rees from the Institute of HeartMath.  The link will get you to a free download of the e-book.  This appears to be a useful book, especially if you suffer from anxiety or stress.
