The EH&S Department strongly encourages environmentally friendly alternatives, particularly in terms of waste disposal, material exchange and purchasing efficiency.
UTD's current recycling program covers aluminum cans, office paper, and ink cartridges. This program is currently being expanded to account for an increase in plastic products on campus, and a lack of proper recycling containers. The EH&S Department is working together with student interest groups such as the Students for Environmental Awareness (SEA) who fully support UTD's recycling program, and have begun to educate the student body in order to make this program more successful.
The school is also researching materials exchange concerning lead batteries, light ballasts, monitors, oils for fuel blending, and paints. Development of pilot projects for the exchange of Mercury thermometers to alcohol based units is currently under way.
Other "green" UTD programs of the future may include developing a fleet information database for environmental research, monitoring of air conditioning and heating units, proper construction protocols, and use of alternative forms of insulation in campus buildings.
